My job as a lawyer has given
me the opportunity to work for many worthy people, and has put me in touch with a great variety of places
and problems. I learned about the Tutsis' danger in Rwanda for the first time -- before the massacres took
place -- when a new client told me why he feared to return to Kigali at the end of his stay in the United States. An
elderly woman told me of how she had given her house to her son, and had received a lawyer's letter threatening to evict
her from the basement where she lived. In Canada, I took testimony from the chairman of a corporation that had made
a tender offer for a U.S. company-- and laughed with him as he told good-humored stories (but I still got the evidence
I was after). And one winter night I stood on the front steps of a city church, surrounded by police officers, and
gave advice to two brave women who faced arrest for defending the church's ministry to the "street homeless." That confrontation with the police led ultimately to the U.S. Supreme Court -- where
my clients won. On the way there, I mastered the jurisprudence of the Free Exercise Clause. Other cases have required
me to learn about copyright law as it relates to computer software; about the constitutional limits on venue-shopping
in federal courts; about the abuses many women suffer in Russia and Guinea-Conakry; and about the implications
of the Salafist civil war in Algeria in the 1990's for Muslim-background religious converts; to name a few examples.
Each client has given me a new appreciation of the complexity of our world. When I represent someone, I investigate the facts of my client's case; analyze the law that applies; develop
options; and pursue my client's best interests with energy and
ethics. My qualifications and legal experience are described in the other pages of this website. If I can
be of service to you, please contact me. I try to answer all calls and emails within 24 hours.
