The Law
Offices of Jonathan Robert Nelson, P.C. have represented international members of the local business, immigrant
and diplomatic communities since 1991. The firm also provides confidential advice concerning United States and New York law
to individuals, institutions and business entities located in other countries. In addition to the specific staff of this law
office, the firm employs trusted specialist professionals on a case by case basis to cooperate in providing complete, accurate
and confidential legal advice to clients in diverse situations. Services
to the international community include the following: * Private
consultations concerning compliance with United States laws governing business, financial and immigration decisions. Resolving
questions of whether and how to do business in the United States, and what specific laws govern the activities of persons
who directly or indirectly affect United States commerce, often involves complex factual and legal analyses and, sometimes,
discreet investigations. * Assistance with setting up business
operations in the United States and complying with local laws concerning employment. * Legal immigration and non-immigrant visas, as well as representation of aliens in immigration removal proceedings
(see Immigration page at this web-site).
* Litigation representation
in New York state and federal courts. United States laws often assert jurisdiction over foreign companies whose actions affect
U.S. commerce in some way. Extraterritorial jurisdiction is not unlimited, however, and U.S. and foreign law may provide defenses
to claims filed in U.S. courts. This office provides advice to international persons and entities who are, or who may become,
involved in U.S. litigation. Where appropriate, this office appears in court as the attorney for parties involved in international
litigation.
* Local counsel to foreign law firms. From time to time foreign law firms need local representation
in connection with legal matters of diverse kinds. Inquiries from overseas counsel concerning their clients' needs in New
York and the United States are welcome. * Advice to foreign law
firms on compliance with US discovery proceedings. Federal and State laws in the United States create a wide range
of duties and powers with respect to the discovery and disclosure of information, affecting individuals and organizations
that are involved in litigation. Assistance from an experienced U.S. litigator may help non-U.S. attorneys keep their
overseas clients from incurring penalties and other sanctions caused by a failure to comprehend fully the scope and requirements
of discovery rules.
* Local counsel to the international
community. Sooner or later, almost everyone in New York needs a personal lawyer -- to iron out minor administrative details;
for advice on compliance with local laws; for assistance with a personal transaction; and for other one-time or recurring
concerns. This office welcomes your inquiries concerning particular projects and questions.
Mr. Nelson earned
a Master's degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in 1984. He was the
managing editor of the Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business in 1983. Mr. Nelson was vice-president
of a committee of the Interamerican Bar Association for ten years. He speaks the French and Spanish languages proficiently,
has delivered papers in the Spanish language in Ecuador and Argentina, and has successfully represented many foreign
and overseas clients.
